Painter in Residence

Four resident artists work outdoors creating plein air paintings of the park

Bryant Park invites applicants to participate in the sixth annual Painter in Residence Program for the purpose of creating representational imagery of Bryant Park. The paintings will be a visual record of Bryant Park from a painter’s perspective. Four painters will be selected to paint outdoors in Bryant Park for two week periods. Program Details

Program 1 – July 10 to July 21

Program 2 – July 24 to August 4

Program 3 – August 7 to August 18

Program 4 – August 21 to September 1

These paintings are commissioned by BPC and become the company’s sole property.

Subject matter: Landscapes and iconic features of the park

Painting schedule: Daily (in case of inclement weather, can be rescheduled with Bryant Park’s approval)

Stipend: $1000 per week plus one-time supplemental fund of up to $500 for materials, $1000 per week plus one-time supplemental fund of up to $500 for materials. Amount for materials will be confirmed with receipts.

Application Deadline: May 31, 2017

Announcement of Award: June 15, 2017

The competition is open to all U.S. citizens. Participants must be at least 18 years of age. Any artwork submitted for consideration must have been completed in the last two years. Though representational styles will be given preference, innovative and experimental approaches are also welcome. Likewise, art using either traditional or alternative media will be accepted for consideration.

Eligibility

The submitted art will be juried by a group comprised of Bryant Park staff and select members of the New York City art community.

All applications must include the following in PDF format:

  • Completed application form (pages 3 & 4 of this document)
  • Artistic statement
  • Resume or CV outlining education, awards, artistic shows, and reviews of relevant work

Application Process and Required Materials

Applications must also include images of the candidate’s work in JPEG format (see Artwork Submission Requirements below).

Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Artists must submit all required application materials by mail or e-mail.

The electronic copies of all application materials (including completed application, artistic statement, resume or CV, and samples of your work) must be saved onto one standard CD, DVD or USB drive formatted for PC. Please write your name, address, phone number and email address on the CD, DVD or USB. Please do not submit slides or print photographs with this application.

All submitted CDs, DVDs, or USB drives become the property of the Bryant Park Corporation and will not be returned.

Artwork Submission Requirements

  • Images cannot be larger than 900 pixels in any one direction or orientation
  • Images must be in JPEG format at 72dpi
  • Images must be titled in the following format: Last name_First name_Title_Year_Size_Medium.jpg
  • Please avoid including special characters/symbols (such as “, ?, ! etc.) in the title when submitting the images
