Pianist, Organist, Dancer

“Straight ahead!” - Billy Taylor

Danny Mixon is an internationally acclaimed pianist, organist, and dancer who began his career at 17 playing piano with Sam Brown and Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles in Atlantic City. With many achievements to his name, he has performed at the White House, the Olympics in Salt Lake City, Jazz Festival in Milan, Newport Jazz Festival at Sea on the Queen Elizabeth 2, and Grant’s Tomb in New York City.

As a renowned organist Danny’s played with Carlos Garnett at Baby Grand, accompanied Big Maybelle at the Blue Coronet Club in Brooklyn, and is a celebrated regular at Showmans Jazz in Harlem. In addition, he studied and performed as a tap dancer at the Ruth Williams Dance Studio in Harlem where – along with his sister Deborah Mixon – was known even then as “The Show Stopper.” Danny attended the High School of Performing Arts where he majored in dance.

A consummate performer he has worked with many legends from Lionel Hampton, Joe Williams, Yusef Lateef, Charles Mingus, and Hank Crawford, to Savion Glover, Eubie Blake, Art Blakey, Jimmy Witherspoon, Marlena Shaw, Ben Vereen, and the wonderful Antoinette Montague of Jazz Woman to the Rescue fame - to name but a few.

He is one of the first musicians to be honored by the National Jazz Museum in Harlem with the Harlem Speaks and has received many other awards including the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation Jazz Appreciation, and the Harlem Unsung Heroes of Afrikan Amerikan Classical Music award.

Currently he is an instructor and performance artist with the Jazzmobile as well as The School for Jazz and Contemporary Music -the New School. Recently he completed his latest CD, The Danny Mixon Trio Live at the Rubin Museum.

Asked about one of his greatest joys, Danny will tell you, “…performing, composing, and arranging for the Danny Mixon Trio or Quartet.”
